Two people are dead and a State Police Lieutenant was seriously injured in a crash on I-390 this morning. The impact was so violent that it ripped the vehicles apart.

New York State Police say a southbound car suddenly crossed over the highway and the grass median and into the oncoming lanes. It crashed into a northbound car driven by the trooper. A third car may have clipped the trooper’s car trying to avoid the crash.

State Police said in a news conference that a man and a woman inside the first car were killed in the crash. The injured trooper was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital where she was undergoing surgery. She was on duty at the time of the crash. The third driver wasn’t injured.

Troopers have not yet released the names of those killed in the crash.

The northbound lanes of 390 were shut down between Hylan Drive and East Henrietta Road for about seven hours.
