The wideout’s knee procedure was not so serious.

Back in May, Buffalo Bills sophomore wide receiver Zay Jones underwent knee surgery that was expected to sideline him throughout “the spring.” That vague timetable has recently been clarified. Bills coach Sean McDermott expects Jones to be ready for training camp at St. John Fisher he told reporters on Thursday before the team’s final minicamp practice.

When asked if Jones would be ready by the opening of camp on July 26th, McDermott said that he has “no reason to not believe that at this time.”

“[Jones] is going through that rehab progress and attacking it aggressively,” McDermott continued. “Just like I mentioned a few minutes ago with respect to the rest of the team, from now until we report to training camp in Rochester, it will be a critical point in time for Zay and his growth.”

After a disappointing rookie season in which he only caught 27 passes for 316 yards and 2 touchdowns, Jones needs all the practice snaps he can get this offseason. Without his presence, the team has been working through a lengthy rotation that includes veterans Rod Streater, Malachi Dupre, and Andre Holmes along with rookies Ray-Ray McCloud, Austin Proehl, and Robert Foster. Once Jones gets back on the field, he’ll likely claim the starting role opposite Kelvin Benjamin.
