Wrestler and actor Jon Huber has died at the age of 41.
Huber’s wife Amanda revealed on Instagram Saturday that Huber passed away “surrounded by loved ones after a hard fought battle with a non-Covid related lung issue.”
Huber played two seasons in Major League Baseball, both with the Seattle Mariners. Over his major league career, Huber compiled a win-loss record of 2–1 with a 2.57 ERA, and 19 strikeouts in 25 games.
Huber wrestled in the WWE under the ring name Luke Harper and then performed with the AEW as Brodie Lee. He played a soldier named Lachlan Allsopp in the 2017 period action-horror film Mohawk.
“I’m so deeply sorry for the loss of Jon Huber,” Stephanie McMahon, daughter of WWE’s Vince McMahon, wrote. “We bonded over the love of our children. He was a true family man.”
Huber’s fellow wrestler Hulk Hogan and Mohawk director Ted Geoghegan have both paid tribute to the late star.
“Totally devastated over the loss of Jon ‘Luke/Brodie’, such a great talent and awesome human being!” Hogan wrote on Twitter. “RIP my brother HH.”
“Jon Huber, on the set of MOHAWK, would tell anyone who’d listen that he was insanely, cripplingly nervous to act alongside ‘real actors,'” wrote Geoghegan. “Jon had no idea how great he was. He couldn’t fathom that the work he did as a pro wrestler made him a ‘real’ actor. But he was. He SO was.”
A 2017 Rochester Democrat and Chronicle profile described how Huber went from a clean-cut Jesuit school graduate to a bearded mauler in the wring with a mercurial wrestling persona.
“Huber played lacrosse for four years at McQuaid and skated in youth hockey leagues, including a time with Aquinas graduate and former NHL star Brian Gionta.
“Huber started as a backyard wrestler and his professional career began with independent outfits Roc City Wrestling, Rochester Championship Wrestling, NWA Upstate, NWA New York and Upstate Prof Wrestling. He was originally known as Huberboy #2 before renaming himself Brodie Lee.
“He toured as a wrestler on weekends and worked for 7 1/2 years during the week as a book clerk at the Rochester City School District’s Frederick Douglass campus.”
The Rochester Americans tweeted, “We’re so deeply saddened by the loss of AEW superstar, Jon Huber, a Rochester native and lifelong Amerks fan. We send our heartfelt condolences to his friends and family during this extremely difficult time.”
Huber is survived by Amanda and their two children, Brodie and Nolan.
