The West Irondequoit Central School District has received the results from an extensive test of its plumbing systems, and found excessive lead in water samples from 87 out of 622 faucets in district buildings.
According to the report posted on its website, West Irondequoit found the majority of the water sources giving more than 15 parts per billion of lead were bathroom sinks and in science labs. Those faucets have been labeled not safe for drinking, although it’s fine for hand and dish washing. The district says they’re having those outlets retested, and they’ll be replaced or shut off if they continue to show above the federal safety limit.
An outside firm did the analysis from samples collected in the fall. Several schools including Colebrook, Seneca, Southlawn, Listwood and Briarwood had no problems at all.
