Wegmans has something new for people who like seafood, and customers can help out the Gulf of Mexico at the same time.

The chain has partnered with Wild Fish Direct to offer Gulf Lionfish in its stores.

Lionfish is an invasive species that somehow got into the Gulf of Mexico a couple of decades ago. The exotic looking fish reproduces with tremendous speed and it has no natural predators in the Gulf. It also competes with native sport fish for the available food and it eats smaller fish that protect coral reefs.

Fortunately, they’re good to eat. Divers are spearing them and the seafood industry is introducing the meat as a replacement for overfished native species.
