Big changes are coming to the East Avenue Wegmans store. The company is converting nearly half the checkout lanes to self-serve/express.
The company says that’s because people who shop at East Avenue tend to buy just a couple of things at a time, rather than fill a grocery cart. The company is removing seven of the 21 cashier lanes to make way for 12 new self-checkouts. Six will be for seven or fewer items and will be equipped for ApplePay. Six will be for 15 items or fewer and will also be equipped for people to pay with cellphones. Fourteen conventional lanes are being kept.
Wegmans says it’s not laying anyone off because of this. In fact, it has jobs available at the East Avenue store.
