New York’s ban on plastic grocery bags will go into effect starting in March of 2020…but one major grocery chain isn’t waiting.
Wegmans says it will phase out plastic grocery bags by the end of this year for all its New York stores…and the company says this is part of its goal to reduce in-store plastic packaging by two million pounds this year.
Wegmans is eliminating some current plastic packaging and replacing it with plant-based materials made from renewable fiber. It’s already switched from plastic straws and stir sticks to renewable fiber at all its stores and corporate offices. The company is also working at 30 of its stores on a program to aim for zero waste, eliminating all forms of waste that’s traditionally thrown away.
