Webster Central School District Superintendent Carmen Gumina abruptly announced his retirement, effective Friday, April 30th. Gumina has been with the district for more than 30 years. He became superintendent in 2014.

In a letter to parents, Gumina said “it has become clear to me over the last few months that this is the best decision for me, my family and the district.”

Gumina’s decision comes within weeks of a lawsuit filed against the district and Gumina by former basketball coach Kali Watkins. Watkins was charged with child sex abuse in 2019, and was vindicated at trial when he was found not guilty on all charges. In the suit, Watkins claims Gumina was personally hostile to him and aimed the criminal case at him. He says Gumina was having an affair with a woman Watkins was also dating.
