One Wayne County Deputy has resigned and three others have been suspended in the wake of last month’s escape from the Wayne County Jail.
Shawn Meacham escaped from the jail just over a month ago by posing as a weekend inmate who was on his way home after spending his weekend behind bars. Sheriff Barry Virts says the results of an internal investigation found the four deputies failed to follow procedures and make checks that would have caught Meacham before he got outside the jail. Sheriff Virts says Meacham was wearing a prisoner ID bracelet that would have immediately shown who he really was if anyone had bothered to check.
The sheriff says the shift sergeant resigned to avoid being disciplined. Two other deputies will serve a 40 day working suspension…working without pay. A fourth deputy will serve a 10 day working suspension.
