Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren said on a talk show today that she’s not under investigation over mis-depositing financial contributions to her campaign into her Political Action Committee’s account. She calls the whole thing a simple mistake, but both her Democratic primary opponents have jumped on the issue and accused her of violating state election law.
Mayor Warren appeared on WXXI Connections with host Evan Dawson, speaking publicly about the issue for the first time apart from issuing a statement earlier this month.
The exchange at timed grew heated, with the mayor accusing Dawson of “having an agenda” as he pressed her about the issue.
The mayor said “I am not under investigation…it is a flat out lie.”
The mayor’s campaign staff deposited $30,000 into her campaign fund from her PAC. Individual donations to a political campaign are limited to just over $8,500 dollars by state law. Most of that money had been deposited into the wrong account, so staff did an account-to-account transfer which technically violated the limit.
The mayor says the issue has been corrected.
