Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren has named former city Police Chief Cedric Alexander as the city’s new deputy mayor.

Dr. Alexander replaces Len Redon, who retired last year and announced he was fighting cancer. Alexander was police chief under former Mayor Bill Johnson in the early 2000s. He left and became Director of Public Safety for DeKalb County, Georgia, which is the Atlanta area. He’s also been frequently seen on CNN as an expert on police-community relations. He also served on former President Obama’s Commission on 21st Century Policing.

Mayor Warren says Alexander is already known to Rochester Police and community groups and will help move improved police-community relations forward.
