Monroe County health officials are warning of a COVID-19 surge, and they’re urging people, especially young people, to be cautious.
County Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza says the county reported 302 new cases on Thursday, and the positivity rate for the disease has gone from 1.8 percent to 2.7 percent in two weeks. Mendoza believes this is because more COVID variants are coming into the county and spreading faster than the original coronavirus strain. Those who aren’t yet fully vaccinated are at risk.
Dr. Mendoza says case numbers are falling for those 65 and holder who have been vaccinated, and they’re seeing very few cases among people that have had the full course of vaccinations.
Mendoza also urged people not to “vaccine shop” in hopes of getting the new one-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine. He says supplies of that are still low, and you should grab the first vaccination you can, whether it’s Pfizer or Moderna.
