The voyage of the Genesee Brewery beer tanks is about to get underway. North American Breweries says the 12 massive fermentation tanks will begin their trip down the Erie Canal from Albany to Rochester tomorrow (Fri) around 11:00 a.m.

The tanks are currently sitting on barges at the Port of Albany, where they’ve been waiting for dangerously high water levels on the canal from all the spring rains to go down. The string of barges will enter the locks at Waterford and take about six days to make the 225-mile trip. The plan is to offload them at 150 Lee Road in Gates, lower them onto trucks, then take them down Lyell Avenue to St. Paul Street and the Genesee Brewery, two per day.

The tanks are part of the $49 million brewery modernization and expansion project. Each of the dozen tanks is 20 feet wide and 60 feet tall, and can produce 2,000 barrels of beer at a shot.
