State Police CarA young boy was critically injured and three people went to the hospital after a crash that shut down traffic on I-490 coming into downtown Rochester this afternoon.

Witnesses said a woman was driving her Chevy Cobalt down the middle lane approaching Goodman Street when she apparently realized she was about to miss her exit. She jumped lanes trying to make the exit and clipped the tire of a Hummer that had just entered the highway.

Witnesses say that sent both vehicles spinning and flipped both on their sides. The Chevy was sliced open for half its length and the occupants trapped inside. The driver and a young girl were injured. A boy was critically injured and unconscious when rescued. The Hummer driver wasn’t hurt.

Trooper Mark O’Donnell says this was a bad call by a driver who may have been distracted. He says taking the next exit might have cost her another five minutes.

Police had to close traffic from the Can of Worms into downtown Rochester for several hours.
