Verizon says it’s closing its call center in Henrietta by January 27th. It’s one of five centers being closed around the country…according to a website used by Verizon employees to post comments about employment conditions and layoffs. All the employees of those centers were notified in meetings at 2:00 p.m. eastern time.
The company says it’s relocating the centers to other sites “where there is extra capacity and room to grow.” The Henrietta center employs more than 600 people. A spokeswoman says Verizon Communications will give each of those workers a chance to move to another call center within the company.
Verizon announced layoffs from its retail stores last week…blaming a slowdown in growth of wireless device sales.
Governor Cuomo’s office called the announcement “an egregious example of corporate abuse – among the worst we have witnessed during the six years of this administration.”
