Sam Mewis nets goal and Jessica McDonald makes her Senior Team debut.
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 14, 2016) — The United States Women’s National Team wrapped up their 2016 schedule with a pair of wins over Romania’s National Team. Jessica McDonald made her senior team debut on Thursday in the Americans’ 8-1 victory, and Samantha Mewis netted her fourth goal of the year in Sunday evening’s 5-0 victory.
McDonald earned her first cap with the senior team on Thursday in San Jose, when she replaced fellow Flash forward Lynn Williams at the halfway point. The 2016 Western New York Flash Most Valuable Player registered a couple of offensive opportunities in the first friendly against Romania, but did not suit up for the team’s second friendly.
Williams started and played the entire first half of each match in California, logging a total of 90 minutes for the Americans. The Flash forward and 2016 National Women’s Soccer League MVP scored in the first 49 seconds of her senior team debut during the team’s October friendlies.
Mewis also came on at the half of Thursday’s 8-1 win and continued to impress at the international level for the Americans. The 24-year old Flash midfielder came on in the 70′ of Sunday night’s 5-0 win and used her head during the first minute of extra time to redirect Kelley O’Hara’s cross into the back of the net.
Flash defender Abby Dahlkemper did not dress in either friendly due to a foot injury.
