A University of Rochester Medical Center study published today shows children who receive preventive care for their asthma at school make dramatically fewer emergency room visits.
The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatricts. It looks into the Preventive Care Program for Urban Children With Asthma run in the Rochester City School District. It makes sure children take their asthma meds every morning at school. It combines with telemedicine which lets doctors see children from school via the internet. Together, it’s helping students better manage their asthma on their own.
The study shows the school-based program and telemedicine together have cut ER visits for participating children by more than half. The children also had more symptom-free days.
