Researchers from the Wilmot Cancer Center at UR Medicine and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo have made a discovery that lets them predict whether prostate cancer will return after surgery.
The University of Rochester says Wilmot Research Director Hucky Land studied numerous tissue samples from prostate tumors and found a pattern of four genes always occurs in the more aggressive cancers. Finding those genes means a better than 80 percent chance the cancer will return after surgery. Doctors can then prescribe followup treatment such as radiation or chemotherapy.
UR Medicine says the new tool works so well they and Roswell Park have applied for a patent on it.
