UR Medicine is buying the former Sears Store at the Marketplace Mall in Henrietta, and willl use the site for a $240 million Orthopaedics and Physical Performance Center. It will be the largest development project the University of Rochester has undertaken off its campus and hospital sites.
The 330,000 square foot tower will centralize treatment of orthopaedic patients for both surgery and outpatient care. It will be three times the size of the current facility at Clinton Crossing, but still near to Strong Memorial Hospital and public transportation. The current site handles 17,000 patients a month.
Wilmorite President Paul Wilmot said at a news conference that it was determined the Sears site was a good fit for UR Medicine because of the abundant parking available.
University of Rochester trustees, state and town authorities all have to sign off on the project.
