UR Medicine is launching something new they hope will be a national model for long-term management of Parkinson’s disease and other chronic illnesses.
PCDNY is an internet-based teleconferencing system designed to serve as many as 500 patients in underserved areas across New York State. It’s the first of its kind and works over computers, iPhone or other mobile devices.
University of Rochester Medical Center neurologist Kevin Biglan says care of Parkinson’s for these people involves long distance travel, usually for their families and caregivers, too. The program reaches them at home and links them with neurologists and nurses at the URMC. They can be connected with therapists and any other services needed.
There’s no charge for the virtual house calls. The program is supported by the Greater Rochester Health Foundation and the Edmond J. Safra Foundation.
