Leaders of the University of Rochester are condemning proposed cuts to federal research spending by the Trump Administration; cuts they say could do harm to U.S. global leadership in science and technology, as well as the University of Rochester and the entire community.
UR President Joel Seligman, Provost Rob Clark and UR Medical Center CEO Mark Taubman say the university is one of America’s leading research institutions and federal support is critical to that mission. The University of Rochester received $1.7 billion in research funding over the last five years, and they say 75 percent of it came from federal sources. That money also supports thousands of jobs in the local economy.
Their letter says that federal funding has been capped for the last decade, While China, Japan, South Korea, India, and Singapore are investing heavily in research and development.
