The man suspected of stealing a jeep from a gas station in Gates yesterday has been charged with first degree robbery, first degree reckless endangerment, attempted reckless assault on a police officer, criminal possession of stolen property and a number
of other charges including resisting arrest.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says 29-year-old Kevin Simpson of Rochester was caught while hiding in a closet at the Continental School of Beauty in Henrietta. His capture ended a day-long crime spree that began with the theft of a car in Rochester.
Simpson allegedly dumped that car at the gas station and stole a jeep the owner had left running while he went into the store to buy a chocolate milk. A citizen spotted what looked like the stolen jeep in the parking lot of the Home Depot in Henrietta. When a deputy approached the Jeep, Simpson hit the gas and sped away, striking the deputy and his patrol car. He hit two other cars trying to get out of the parking lot.
Simpson ditched the Jeep in the Henrietta Wegmans parking lot. He fled on foot to the rear of the plaza and made his way into the beauty school, where he tried to hide in the closet. Deputies arrested him after a scuffle and had to carry him away in restraints.
The deputy escaped with minor injuries and is OK.
