A Center for Governmental Research report says the University of Rochester is now the 6th largest private employer in the state and the biggest in Upstate New York.
The U of R and its health system and hospitals employ a total of more than 28,600 people both full and part time. That includes more than a thousand new employees that came in through the affiliations with Jones and Noyes Memorial Hospitals in the Southern Tier and the Finger Lakes. That’s an 11 percent increase over two years.
The CGR says the University of Rochester’s direct and indirect impact on New York’s economy generates about 56,000 jobs and $3.2 billion worth of total wages statewide. That’s counting wages, employee spending, purchases, capital investments plus student and visitor spending. The U of R paid a total of $1.6 billion in direct wages to its employees last year.
University CEO Joel Seligman released the report today. He says this happened with the tremendous support of the region’s business community, state and federal governments and the University of Rochester’s neighbors.
