An article in Mother Jones magazine has drawn concern in the University of Rochester community. It tells about a decade-long effort by a female faculty member fighting against what she said were years of sexual harassment in the workplace, at the hands of a professor she described as a “narcissistic and manipulative sexual predator.”
The article published on Friday says seven current and former professors and a former grad student have submitted identical Equal Opportunity Employment Commission complaints against the offending professor and the university. The 111-page complaint claims he created a toxic workplace environment and says they plan to sue if federal authorities don’t take up the case.
University of Rochester officials have issued a statement saying they thoroughly investigated the complaints brought by the eight women and “they could not be substantiated.”
The university said it relied on two separate investigations, one by an inside and one by an outside investigator, and found no violation of law or of university policies.
In a separate statement, University President Joel Seligman says the U of R will respond to the EEOC through the proper channels and will not revisit the issue in the media. Seligman says the university is confident in the results of its investigations and will not tolerate sexual harassment in its organization.
