The National Institutes of Health has presented the University of Rochester with a $19 million grant based on its expertise in turning new scientific discoveries into useful medical therapies.
The money goes to the University’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and NIH is asking it to coordinate discoveries by researchers across the country.
Work by the Translational Science Institute based on primary research by U of R scientists led to surfactant, that helps premature infants breathe, and to three new vaccines including the HPV vaccine that helps prevent cervical cancer. The institute will become a central hub for all clinical research institutes around the nation and will do the same for them.
