A Wayne County woman is dead and three other people were injured early this morning in a house fire.
It happened in Palmyra, on Port Gibson Road, just before 3:00 a.m. Firefighters from at least four departments were called in to fight the fire. The house was engulfed in flames when they arrived. Two of the home’s other residents were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.
A dog woke the family, but they were unable to rescue 84-year-old Dorothy Bouwens, who was sleeping in a basement room.
Firefighters had barely put away their equipment from the morning fire in Palmyra when a double house went up in flames by the banks of the Erie Canal in Manchester.
Neighbors reported hearing popping sounds shortly after the fire started about 12:30 p.m. off Route 31 near Hanley Road. Heavy smoke began coming from the house. Port Gibson Fire Chief Scott Monagle says there was heavy flame when they arrived….
Two families lived in the house, but nobody was home when the fire started. Firefighters say a dog was killed in the blaze. The cause is under investigation.
