Two people are dead and several others injured after a violent weekend in Rochester, one of them a 16-year-old who was shot to death while attending a birthday party Saturday night.
Rochester police say 16-year-old Zahira Smith was shot in the upper body at the party at an Air B&B on Emerson Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old woman whose name has not yet been released was shot and wounded, but is recovering.
Police say the shots were fired at the party goers from a vacant lot across the street. Police do not believe the victims were the intended targets.
Officers also chased individuals believed to have been involved with the gunfire. They caught one of them, 18-yeear-old Amir Andrews, and they recovered a loaded 9 mm handgun with an illegal bullet capacity. Andrews has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
Meanwhile, a 51-year-old man was shot and killed in the Upper Falls neighborhood on Saturday night.
Police say Angel Alvalle was found shot on Siebert Place. He died shortly after being brought to Strong Memorial Hospital.
No suspects are charged with either of these crimes so far.
Two other people, a man and a woman, were shot and wounded in separate incidents over the weekend.
