A draft White House budget proposal leaked to the National Association of Clean Air Agencies proposes to slash federal funding to clean up pollution in the Great Lakes by 75 percent.
The Trump Administration draft proposes reducing the Environmental Protection Agency budget by one-fourth. It would virtually eliminate the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which has paid for local projects including the $10 million restoration of Braddock Bay in Greece. It would be cut from $300 million to $10 million.
Also on the chopping block is federal funding to New York and other states that’s used to fund water quality checks on swimming beaches, and a $13 million cut in compliance monitoring, used to check the safety of public water systems.
The money would go instead to President Trump’s proposed military buildup. Reporters for the Detroit Free Press say they were able to confirm the proposed Great Lakes cuts.
The Trump budget is due to be released on March 13th.
