The general commanding Fort Drum says the shooting death of a New York State Trooper at the hands of an active duty soldier is “a terrible tragedy.”

In a statement released on Monday, Major General Walter Platt of the 10th Mountain Division confirmed that suspect Justin Walters is a soldier. A Fort Drum spokeswoman said Walters is a staff sergeant, stationed at Fort Drum for nearly 10 years and twice deployed to Afghanistan.

The Army Criminal Investigation Command is investigating along with State Police.

Walters allegedly fatally shot both his wife Nichole and Trooper Joel Davis, who was approaching the house to check out a domestic violence report.

Walters is being held without bail on two counts of murder.
