New York State Police have identified the trooper killed near Fort Drum in Jefferson County Sunday as Joel Davis, a four year veteran of the force.
Governor Cuomo’s issued a statement saying Trooper Davis’ death is “another sad reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face each day in order to protect our communities and serve the residents of this great state.”
The trooper was shot and fatally wounded while responding to a domestic disturbance call. He died at a Jefferson County hospital. A woman described by police as the wife of the shooter was also killed.
State Police identify the shooter as 32-year-old Justin Walters. He was taken into custody and has been charged with murder. The Army confirms he’s an active duty soldier, stationed at Fort Drum. The fort’s commander calls it “a terrible tragedy.”
