Could the Buffalo forward be on the move?

According to Andy Strickland of Fox Sports Midwest, trade interest is picking up around Buffalo Sabres forward Patrik Berglund.

The 30-year-old veteran is currently suspended indefinitely for failure to report. It’s become pretty clear over the past few days that he no longer wants to stay in Buffalo.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. Berglund has three years remaining on his contract after this season with a $3.85 million cap hit. The Sabres have basically no leverage in any type of deal with Berglund’s refusal to report.

The return likely won’t be great and could even result in the Sabres taking back a contract from another team in exchange for the disgruntled forward. It’s also possible the Sabres are forced to retain some salary in a potential deal.

At the end of the day getting Berglund off their salary cap and moving on from this headache will be good news.

Don’t forget the NHL Holiday roster freeze goes into effect at 11:59 PM on Wednesday night.

*Update

The Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday announced that forward Patrik Berglund has been placed on unconditional waivers with the intent to terminate his contract. There will be no further information or comment at this time.
