Former Rochester City Councilmember Tim Mains passed away suddenly on Thursday morning after suffering a medical emergency at his home in Walkill.

Mains was superintendent of the Pine Bush School District, where School Board President Gretchen Meier said “We extend our deepest sympathies to Tim’s family as we mourn his loss and reflect on the positive impact he had on public education. He will be greatly missed.”

Before coming to Pine Bush, Mains was superintendent of the Jamestown City Schools, a Rochester school principal, a Rochester City Councilmember and both a teacher and guidance counselor at Arcadia High School in the Greece Central School District

Tributes to Mains have come in from Rochester’s Acting Mayor, James Smith, City School Superintendent Lesli Myers-Small, Chamber of Commerce CEO Bob Duffy and many others.

Mains was the first openly-gay public official to be elected in New York State at the time of his victory in a City Council election in 1984.
