There was local flooding around the Rochester area as heavy thunderstorms swept through late Monday afternoon, and the heavy rain forced a discharge of untreated sewage from the Rochester area sewer system.
The weather station at the Rochester Airport reported .41 of an inch of rain.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says 3,300,000 gallons of sewage was discharged into the Genesee River when the sudden rainfall exceeded the capacity of the storm water tunnels that usually keep rainwater out of the sewers.
Officials at the Van Lare Treatment Plant reported the discharge lasted for a little over an hour.
