The New York State Thruway is beginning a pilot program to install speed trap cameras at work sites on the Thruway. Drivers who speed through a work zone would get an automatically-generated ticket and a fine in the mail.
The speed camera test is part of the budget bill signed by Governor Hochul. Thruway Operations and Maintenance Director Jim Konstalid says the average speed through work zones is 83 miles per hour, and they’ve had 175 crashes in work zones last year caused by speeders. He says they’ve got to try something to get a handle on the problem.
Craig Overcamp, the Thruway Maintenance Supervisor, says speeding and distracted driving are the worst they’ve ever been.
Exactly when and where the speed cameras are to be installed on the Thruway work zones still has to be worked out.
