A protest over an arrest earlier in the day led to an incident at the downtown Rochester Public Safety Building that injured three Rochester police officers.
Police say 50-year-old Nicholas Wilt was arrested by Monroe County Deputies earlier Tuesday, who the discovered he had a warrant against him for failing to show up in court for a previous arrest. But it turned out there was an error in the warrant; Wilt was supposed to be in court October 22nd, not September 22nd as the judge believed when he issued the bench warrant.
Rochester Police had already served the warrant on Mr. Wilt by that time and he was taken to the Monroe County Jail.
Tuesday evening, a group of protesters arrived at the PSB to protest Wilt’s arrest. They entered the building, and police say 26-year-old Jordan Hughes assaulted a Rochester Police sergeant and another officer with a weapon. A third officer was injured in a scuffle. Hughes was arrested on two counts of assault. The three officers were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police confirm that the warrant was in error, and say they’re working with the courts to make sure it does’t happen again.
