The International St. Lawrence River Board says it will be letting more water flow out of Lake Ontario in the coming days, which is good news for lakeshore property owners hit by flooding.
The board, which is part of of the International Joint Commission, assessed the Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence system this week. Lake Ontario at 248 feet, nine inches, is now the highest it’s been since they began keeping records in 1918. As spring rains appear to have ended and water levels on the St. Lawrence are going down, the board says they can release correspondingly more water from Lake Ontario.
They began releasing more water from the Cornwall-Massena dam earlier this week, but they caution it will take several weeks for a significant decrease in water levels. Because of the vast amounts of excess water it will take months to get Lake Ontario back to more average water conditions.
They say people will have to stay on the alert until then.
