OTTAWA — Robin Lehner made 32 saves and Sam Reinhart scored the winner and the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Ottawa Senators 2-1 at Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday, ending the Senators three-game winning streak.
Lehner, who played for the Senators from 2010-15, is 2-0-1 against his former team.
Kyle Okposo scored for the Sabres (5-4-2), who are 4-1-2 on the road.
Mike Hoffman scored for the Senators (7-4-0) and Craig Anderson made 30 saves.
Reinhart put the Sabres ahead 2-1 at 8:22 of the third period with some good stick work along the goal line. The puck fell at his feet at the edge of the crease and he kicked it to his stick, putting a shot from the goal line off Anderson’s foot. As the puck crept towards the goal line, Reinhart got his stick in front of the post and nudged it in for his second goal of the season.
The Sabres tied the game 67 seconds into the third period when Okposo scored his team-leading fifth goal. Okposo, jostling in front of Anderson, got his stick on a wrist shot by defenseman Jake McCabe.
The Senators ended a 0-for-11 streak on the power play when Hoffman scored at 2:42 of the second period and the Sabres serving a too many men on the ice penalty.
Hoffman finished off a well-conceived passing play which saw Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson feed the puck to Bobby Ryan below the goal line to Lehner’s right. Ryan passed it to Hoffman in the slot and his shot went in high on the glove side.
It was Hoffman’s third goal of the season and his third in the past four games.
Lehner was tested more often and more severely than Anderson. He sprawled to get the paddle of his stick on a backhand shot by Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau with 5:05 to go in the first period.
He made another great save moving to his left to stop a quick shot by Senators forward Mark Stone off a 2-on-1 with 3:04 left in the second period. Stone was set up by a sharp pass by Ryan through the skates of McCabe.
