Rochester’s Mount Hope Cemetery will keep extended hours on election day to accommodate women who want to celebrate their vote at Susan B. Anthony’s grave site.
It’s become common for area women to go to Anthony’s grave after voting and put their “I voted today” stickers on her tombstone. The practice has drawn national media attention.
Mayor Lovely Warren says she’s extending the Mount Hope visitor hours to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cemetery officials warn Ms. Anthony’s stone is in an older part of the cemetery that you can’t drive to. The North Gate will be open for pedestrians and staff will be on hand to guide visitors. Bring a flashlight.
One more thing: they’re putting up special commemorative boards and they’d rather the “I voted” stickers go on those instead of Anthony’s tombstone. Those who do will get a special commemorative sticker in place of the one they left while they last.
