Syracuse University Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a person on I-690 in Syracuse Wednesday night in what police are calling a tragic accident.
Syracuse Police say a car spun out and hit a guardrail on the interstate near the Thompson Road exit, and it ended up partially blocking the driving lane. The driver and passengers got out of the car. The driver, 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez of Syracuse, was then struck and fatally injured by Coach Boeheim’s car which came up from behind. Police say Boeheim swerved around the wrecked car trying to avoid a collision, but hit Jimenez who was trying to get to the median.
Boeheim reportedly called 911 and cooperated with police. Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner said he did everything a person in that situation should do, including flagging down following cars. He said it’s unlikely any charges will be filed, but said that’s up to the district attorney.
