A man reported to be having an apparent mental health crisis allegedly stole a car at a bank on Lake Road in Sweden, drove it to Brockport and eventually ran it into the Erie Canal.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says the man got out of the car before letting it roll into the canal. They are working on getting him help and are determining if he will face criminal charges. They say the man has a history of mental health issues.
The man reportedly began smashing windows of cars in the bank parking lot until he was able to gain access to one and drive off with it. He refused orders by a Brockport police officer to stop before the car went into the canal.
The canal has been closed to boat traffic in Brockport while authorities work on getting the car out of the water.
