After considerable negative reaction, the State of New York has revised its order that children between 2-and-5 years old must wear masks while in daycare or childcare programs.

The Department of Health and the Office of Children and Family Services had made that order just a few days ago. Parents, daycare providers and lawmakers began speaking out against it, and on Monday the two agencies issued a joint statement saying they had reconsdered. Both agencies say they understand how hard it is to keep a mask on a young child, and will merely encourage children to wear masks, not require it.

That’s been the state’s policy since the beginning of the pandemic.

They urged any child care staff who have not been vaccinated to do so as soon as possible.
