Monroe High SchoolThe State Education Department says significantly more students in Grades 3-8 are scoring “proficient” in the English Language Arts and Math tests.

Fewer than a third scored “proficient” in the standard Common Core English exams last year. Now it’s nearly 38 percent, up by 6.6 points. The math test scores were up a point, from about 38 to about 39 percent.

Rochester city schools remain the lowest scoring of the five big-city districts despite improvements. Rochester ELA scores are up from just 4.7 percent “proficient” to 6.7 percent this year. That compares with better than 30 percent for New York City students.

The math test results were slightly down; essentially unchanged at just over seven percent “proficient.”
