State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says New York is suing a company that charged people a fee to sign them up for the STAR property tax exemption, which doesn’t cost anything.
Schneiderman is suing YCA corporation and its owner for allegedly scamming thousands of new homeowners statewide out of at least $1.5 million. He’s seeking full restitution and a complete accounting of everyone he says paid that fake enrollment fee.
YCA sent official-looking mailers to homeowners, many of whom thought they were dealing with a government agency. People who filled out the form were actually signing their entire property tax relief check over to the company.
