New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says there’s been a record number of data breech notices filed with his office for 2017: more than 15-hundred of them. That’s the most since the state began keeping track of data breech complaints in 2006.

Schneiderman estimates the personal records of 9.2 million New Yorkers were exposed to hackers and data thieves, and that’s four times as many as in 2016. The increase is largely due to the enormous Equifax data breech.

The Attorney General says he’s calling for legislation that would require Facebook and all social media sites to notify his office and New York consumers any time their personal data is obtained and misused in violation of the law.

The most stolen record is people’s social security numbers, followed by credit card numbers and other financial information.
