New York State is launching a year-long study into a discovery State Health Department researchers made while looking over data from the state’s cancer registry: Warren County near Albany and the Erie County-Buffalo area have a 20 percent higher incidence of cancer than New York City, which has some of the lowest cancer rates in the state.
Governor Andrew Cuomo says they want to find out why that is, and if it can be prevented. Both the State Health Department and the Department of Environmental Conservation will try to figure what’s causing that deviation, and if anything can be done to prevent it. Cuomo says they want to look at health care, demographics and environmental factors.
The study will focus on the Glenn’s Falls-Warren County area, Buffalo and Erie County, Chautauqua County and New York City.
