New Yorkers use an estimated 23 billion plastic bags each year, but that could be drastically reduced if the state follows the report of a task force which wants to ban plastic grocery bags.
The Plastic Bag Task Force has issued its report to the state legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo. Ten municipalities around the state have banned plastic bags or put a surcharge on them.
The rationale for doing away with them includes the fact that they’re made from fossil fuels and become a major source of litter.
