The New York State Photonics Board has approved $106 million in funding for the American Institute for Manufacturing Photonics in Rochester.
It’s part of the money New York has pledged to the AIM Photonics Center, which is supposed to receive $600 million over the next four years from a consortium of industries and the federal government as well. The center’s national headquarters is in Rochester.
Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and United States Senator Chuck Schumer are hailing the state approval.
The photonics manufacturing institute is defense related, but its work also includes radically increasing the capacity of internet networks, much faster computer chips and enhanced medical technology.
