The Federal Highway Administration has docked New York State $14 million, for not taking down those “I Love NY” road signs that turned out to violate federal highway rules.
Governor Cuomo had the blue signs that name regional attractions installed statewide. More than 500 were put up along New York’s highways despite a 2013 federal order against it. In a letter sent today to the State Department of Transportation, the Highway Administration says the state has until September 30th to take down the signs if they want the $14 million restored.
The Cuomo Administration spent more than $8 million putting the signs up along interstates and state highways. The federal government has numerous rules governing what can and can’t be on highway signs, and the state signs violate several of them including displaying web addresses. The highway administration says they’re a safety concern.
