New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia have jointly written to all New York’s school districts, advising them how to comply with both state and federal immigration laws.

The advisory comes following the Trump Administration’s immigration policy crackdown. Schneiderman says New York ensures the rights of immigrant children to attend its public schools without fear of reprisal. Elia says New York’s history is a refuge for people from other lands seeking a new and better life.

Schneiderman says federal law also states that a school district can’t disclose information about students without the parents’ permission, nor may police remove a student from school grounds or interrogate them without a parent or guardian’s permission unless a crime has been committed on school property.
