University of Rochester officials say they’re going to impose furloughs on employees at the University of Rochester Medical Center and elsewhere in the university because of losses from the coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter to employees, University President Sarah Mangelsdorf says the negative financial effects of the pandemic and the suspension of elective surgical procedures has hit the medical center hard. While those procedures are about to resume, Mangelsdorf says it will be some time before the losses can be made up.

As a result, there will be a temporary furlough program for staff on the River Campus, The Eastman School of Music, the Memorial Art Gallery and the South Campus beginning May 10th. They hope it will conclude by the end of August.
